TOPIC: Tune of the Month October-Hornpipes

Re: Tune of the MOnth October-Hornpipes 2 years 9 months ago #115

Indeed the sound looks like a French one but I think it's more the rythm which is close to French "Bourrée à trois temps" we are playing on our French 16# pipes!

well I confess that when I first played the Wm Byrd I was surprised by how much like a three-time bourree it sounded. There are quite a few late 16th-early & 17th century Scottish tunes that sound like mazurkas too ...

It's November I know, but I'm still working my way through the hornpipes; here's a remarkable one from 1625. Just one more to go and then we can get on with November.

Here at last is Mr Preston's Hornpipe; still not up to scratch - a bit too quick but it's November and there are 9/4 hornpipes to play ...

Rather late to the party I know, new member an all that, just wanted to say that this, 17th Century Hornpipe, is the single best piece of pipe music I've heard in a long while. I can't say as I'm a big fan of early for early's sake music, a lot seems out of context and badly interpreted to my modern ear, this though just rings genuine through and through. Better still it's a cracking tune as well, this is straight to the top of my must learn list when the new pipes turn up!
