I've just had a look at the photo attached to your 30th anniversary piece (pipers playing at the 1981 Edinburgh Folk Festival opening).

It looks like this might have been taken in Bristo Square. Certainly the Teviot Row students Union was used for the festival at the time. I know that Edinburgh students are posh, but I'm fairly sure that they don't wear spats (at least they didn't in my day), so my suggestion is that this is a Breton pipe band. The Bagad Kemper used to visit from time to time, led by the impressively hirsute Erwan Ropars - so it might well be them.
