I'm looking for a CHEAP small pipe chanter in A to use on the odd occasion with my border pipe drones. I'm curious about the Dunfion plastic ones and wonder if anyone has had any experience of using them, particularly with a generic cane reed, such as those from pipe dreams? I know that we get what we pay for (sometimes at least) but what does it take really to knock out a cylindrically bored tube in a uniform material with decent modern tooling? As long as there is a reasonable intonation and a good octave I'll be happy however I really do not like the sound of plastic chanter reeds and a crowing top A and would rather not bother if this is what I'll end up with.
PS. In this case I'm using "generic" to mean not specifically fitted to the chanter and definitely not implying any problems or quality issues with the excellent reeds Ronnie and company manufacture.
