Hospitalfield teaching weekend venue

The teaching weekend, 30 November to 2 December 2018, was held at Hospitalfield House, Arbroath.

'The Hospitalfield weekend was my first ever LBPS residential teaching event, and without doubt, a thoroughly memorable and enriching one.' Bill Allison

'Many thanks to Anne for arranging a very enjoyable weekend at Hospitalfield House. Inspiring teaching, great company and a fascinating venue! And the Mortuary Chapel was a wonderful place to play - and quite magical when everyone joined in with The Rowan Tree.' Caroline Barden

'Many thanks are due to Anne for organising such a successful event. The venue was very good - easily accessible by road, rail and bus, and the food was excellent. It was also very enjoyable to play in a well-preserved historic building. We should certainly consider using Hospitalfield again in future. The music was also well-chosen, with a strong local connection in the form of the Miller MS and an interesting look at tunes from the Isle of Man.' Paul Boness

See below for brief programme of the weekend:

The tutors, Ian Kinnear and Neil Clark, offered a choice of workshops.

Ian's workshops were: 1) Music from the Robert Miller manuscript, 2) Making the tune your own - Embellishments and style, and 3) Tuning and tone

Neil's workshops were: 1) The Unknown Warrior” by GS Maclennan and 2) Tunes from The Isle of Man

Friday evening included  a St Andrew’s night supper and a playing session. On Saturday evening, after the evening meal, Ian gave an interesting talk on ‘The Davidson Pipes’ - an early set of bellows blown smallpipes. This was followed by a playing session. On Sunday afternoon the group played an informal concert in the Mortuary Chapel (a wee version of Rosslyn) with many visitors coming to listen.
